SEIU MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN AGAINST
WACKENHUT SERVICES, INC. (WSI)
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is the largest private sector union in America. The SEIU seeks membership growth through aggressive "corporate campaigns" that have a blunt message to employers, "Let us unionize your workforce or we will destroy your reputation." This tactic has been used against a number of organizations to include Wal-Mart, Kaiser Permanente, Advocate Health Care, Catholic Healthcare West, and Sutter Health.
SEIU is attempting to coerce The Wackenhut Corporation and WSI to recognize it as the "exclusive" collective bargaining representative throughout Wackenhut. Wackenhut declined to enter into such an agreement. The SEIU responded with a corporate campaign that is intended to damage WSI’s reputation and relationships with our clients. Their campaign tactics include distributing misinformation, distortion and omission of fact through the media, conducting demonstrations in proximity of work sites in an effort to disrupt normal client operations, and aggressively attempting to intimidate or influence clients.
WSI's Position
WSI does not believe that it is appropriate to grant exclusive representation to any union. Furthermore, the SEIU is not a security guard union as defined by the National Labor Relations Act, Section 9(b)(3). It is important to note that WSI employees are currently represented by ten unions, all of whom meet the NLRA Section 9(b)(3) standard. Management relations with these unions have historically been outstanding. We believe that our employees should remain empowered to choose if they wish to be represented by a union, and to select the security guard union they wish to affiliate with.

On July 12, 2005, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) published a unilateral Settlement Agreement that directed the SEIU to inform its membership to halt disruptive activities and threats to picket, that SEIU members will not engage in unlawful demonstrations, or otherwise threaten, coerce or restrain any clients of the Wackenhut Corporation.
See NLRB Region 13 Settlement Agreement, Case 13-CC-2511-1.
SEIUs global campaign to coerce private security companies into recognizing them as the exclusive bargaining agent for their employees has produced a negative reaction from the Security Police and Fire Professionals of America union (SPFPA). SPFPA President Mr. David L. Hickey writing SEIU explained their position: See Hickey letter.
