Wackenhut Services Corrects the Record In Face Of SEIU Distortions
SEIU Continues to Be Unmoved by the Truth

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida - Wackenhut Services Incorporated (WSI) Vice Chairman and CEO, James L. Long III, once again corrected statements by SEIU, responding to a seemingly endless stream of misstatements and egregious distortions of the truth by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Long said, "SEIU continues to harp on the same old allegations about WSI that have been proven wrong."

"SEIU is either a really slow learner or they simply have no regard for the intelligence and integrity of the press. This continued pattern of twisting and distorting the truth to fit their agenda is irresponsible, at best, and at its worst does a tremendous disservice to the hard-working people who pay dues to this labor union," continued Long.

The SEIU has been engaged in a "corporate campaign" against WSI for over two years. WSI has refused to give in to SEIU demands to waive the right of employees to choose the union they want to be represented by.

"It doesn't matter how many times SEIU and its spokespeople repeat false statements. It is not going to change the fact that WSI will always do what we believe is in the best interest of our employees," said Long. "WSI is already 85% unionized and we have agreements with ten different security unions. Our relationships with those unions have always been good and our employees have elected to continue being represented by those security unions. If that hurts SEIU's feelings, so be it."

The latest accusations by SEIU deal with topics that have been successfully refuted by WSI in the past regarding contracts with the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. For more information on those topics please read the previous press releases available at www.wsihq.com/PR.asp. You may also visit the WSI blog at www.wsiblog.com for additional information.

In addition to the regurgitation of charges against WSI that SEIU knows to be false, the union's latest press release confuses WSI with Wackenhut Corporation (TWC). Wackenhut Services is the U.S. government's largest provider of security services while TWC provides security for commercial entities, including commercial nuclear sites. WSI and TWC are both owned by Group 4 Securicor but due to national security requisites WSI was set up as a proxy company and operates as a completely separate entity. For more information on WSI's proxy status please visit www.wsihq.com/OWSI.asp.

From its inception, WSI has focused on providing the best protection of people and property in the industry. Our history of customer satisfaction has earned us a reputation as the premier protective services organization.

We believe our success depends on the quality of our people, our commitment to service, client satisfaction, listening to and partnering with clients and in our ability to outperform our competitors in the delivery of quality and value added services in the most responsive manner.

WSI is the United States government's largest contractor for professional security services, with 8,000 employees protecting key sites in the U.S. and abroad. We are Americans Protecting America. For additional information about WSI and this issue, please visit www.wsihq.com

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a mixed union that represents service workers such as janitors, cemetery workers, bus drivers and home care workers. They are currently trying to increase their membership through "corporate campaign" tactics such as picketing, hunger strikes, harassment of target companies' customers and other unconscionable tactics.

The unprincipled reputation of the union and its officials includes:
  • SEIU filed a lawsuit, post 9/11, to try and overturn the law requiring federal baggage screeners at airports to be U.S. citizens.
  • SEIU officials have been indicted or convicted of embezzlement of union funds.
  • A former SEIU Local 99 president has been charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy and 17 counts of embezzling union funds as a result of an investigation into former Los Angeles City Councilman Martin Ludlow.
  • The New York Sun business reporter said, "SEIU now seems to depend more on corporate intimidation rather than recruiting."
  • The director of strategic research for the AFSCME union said, "UDW-AFSCME home-care workers across the state were tricked and coerced into signing membership cards with [SEIU] Local 434B."
